HOW DID YOUR JOURNEY AS AN ACTIVIST FOR ANIMAL RIGHTS START?

I wasn't born vegan. It's only about seven years ago after I documented myself that the "mask" society puts over our animal-eating habits fell down. The documentary which truly changed my life wasEarthlings by director Shaun  Monson and narrated by Joaquin Phoenix. I became vegan overnight. I believe animals have the same right to live on this planet as we do and from there I never looked back

"...I can have an even bigger impact through my blog - I call this positive activism. While I do address the problems, I focus on the solutions."

AFTER THIS REALISATION, WHAT WERE THE NEXT STEPS IN ORDER TO SPREAD THE WORD?

Being vegan is not about me; it is all about other beings and the environment, which belongs to no one and to us all. Therefore, changing myself was the first step - the simple step. The second step is changing the world.

I started as a social activist for animal rights and put my heart and soul into it. I did everything from demonstrations and marches to conversations and exhibitions. But after two years, I felt like it was too much for me mentally and so I decided to stop. However I still felt the urge to do something, so I decided to start my blog. In this way, I could combine what I love - fashion, writing, and animals, plus my ethics and beliefs.

Eventually, I found that I can have an even bigger impact through my blog, Style with a smile. I call this "positive activism". While I do address the problems, I focus on the solutions. I show that there is an alternative to basically everything. I believe both types of activism are important and necessary for the creation of change. You need a catalyst and then a positive way forward.

You have strict guidelines for choosing brands you collaborate with. How do brands react to the in-depth questionnaires you share with them?

I made a 9-page questionnaire regarding the social and environmental contributions of the brands, which I send to the ones who are interested in working with me. After the questionnaire is sent some brands don't ever follow up while others send me heart-warming messages. It works as a good filter.

It is important to me to see if a brand aligns with my ethics and takes concrete actions before promoting it to my readers.

"In a world where you can be anything, be kind."

Who DO YOU LOOK UP TO? And WHO WOULD YOU RECOMMEND TO FOLLOW FOR PEOPLE INTERESTED IN SUSTAINABLE FASHION AND VEGANISM?

I have always loved Earthling Ed and have been following him for years. He is a wonderful example of how activism should be done respectfully and with a lot of compassion and sensitivity.

When it comes to my ethical/sustainable fashion journey Orsola De Castro from Fashion Revolution really affected me, as well as Kristen Leo.

A book I really enjoyed is Vegan style by Sascha Camilli. It is wonderful if you are interested in entering and exploring the world of vegan fashion.
